"Ellie is the talk of the town!" by Kelli Patrick My friend Lynn, along with several other horse lovers, came across a feedlot in Texas that had numerous pregnant mares waiting to be sent to slaughter. This awesome group rescued 60 horses from the feedlot and found rescue organizations throughout Texas willing to take them in. Lynn emailed pictures of these horses to friends and family and I was on that distribution list. While scrolling through the pictures of these beautiful horses, whose only crime was to have the misfortune to be owned by irresponsible people, I was struck by the photo of a little gray Arabian. I asked Lynn about her and she told me she had been taken in by The Mastins of Adopt-A-Foal & Equine Rescue in Magnolia, Texas. I found their website, and sure enough, there was the little gray mare, that had been named Ellie, available for adoption. It turns out Ellie was not pregnant, just wormy, which actually saved her because the only reason the feedlot would sell her was because they thought she was pregnant! I brought Ellie to her new home and have only had her for 2 weeks and she is already the talk of the town! I have had a breeder and trainer of champion Arabians and my farrier look at her and both agree she is a fabulous mare. My farrier said “she is the smartest Arabian I have ever met.” She is so sweet, calm and easy to work with. Everyone who meets her wants her and they cannot believe she was on her way to slaughter. But I tell people, that just as millions of dogs and cats end up in animal shelters every year, there are also thousands of horses that are abandoned by people who cannot or will not care for them. I am so grateful to people like Lynn and The Mastins for the work they do to help horses. I rescued my dog, Murphy, from the animal shelter 13 years ago and I always urge people that are looking for a dog to please consider a rescue. Now, after my experience with Ellie and Adopt-A-Foal, I am a strong advocate for horse rescue. I will urge anyone considering getting a horse, to please search out a rescue group in their area. Who knows, they may get as lucky as I did and find a little diamond in the rough just waiting for some TLC.
